sounds good until the word creek and then it’s just a water turbine like farmers used to use to grind grain at the mill

An over-shot wheel (or 2) would make better use of the water flow and wouldn’t require dropping the stator. Stator could be mounted horizontally and driven by gear, belt or chain. Critters going over the wheel would be dropped into the pool below with no harm from turbine blades.
