Did you know they could be this shape?
There is a particular name for the kind of galaxy we’re talking about. It is an elliptical galaxy with a certain name. The name is actually after a famous astronomer. He actually discovered this galactic anomaly over half a century ago:
NGC 2768 is also an example of a so-called Seyfert galaxy, a type of galaxy named for the American astronomer Karl Seyfert. Such galaxies are a subset of an ill-defined species known as active galaxies whose nuclei emit radio- and X-radiation as well as visible light.
This is an incredible high res pic showing a very complex network of filaments and knots.
The supermassive black hole at the center of NGC 2768 speeds up and sucks in gas from the nearby space, creating a stream of material swirling inwards towards the black hole known as an accretion disk.
We look forward to more pics of this galaxy from The Hubble in the next few years!
thanks to sci-news.com for the great info
thanks to NASA for the pics
