The techniques in the search for extraterrestrials is a hotly debated topic. There are many different methods which you may or may not have heard about.  Some involve S.E.T.I. which was recently restarted which involves the sending signals into space and listening for them. One of the newer techniques involves searching for stars exhibiting signs of magnetism supposidely from aliens.  However these new “starshades” may be a very helpful tool.  Basically they filter out some of the extra distortion when looking at certain star systems.  This may be particularly helpful in detecting exoplanets.
