The comments on this thread are actually quite interesting.  One of the commenters had this to say:

The front tire still spins faster in correlation to overall decrease in speed, so it won’t affect as much as you think. Those terrain tires are heavy. I bet even the front tire helps at the first 7-8 meters.

Also nothing can be as diminishing as trying to change momentum while having no solid surface beneath. You would dig the rear wheel further and nothing else.
