Is science fiction becoming science reality?

NASA has a 3 phase plan for the future of Mars travel.  This sounds pretty “out there” but as 2015 brought the most crisp pictures ever of the planet, they are having serious discussions on how to get there with astronauts.   And here is phase number one:

Phase one is called Earth Reliant, and we’re already well into it – it involves research projects carried out on the International Space Station (ISS), looking at how living in space for extended periods of time can affect the human body.

Here is a brief description of phase 2:

Phase two is called Proving Ground. “NASA will learn to conduct complex operations in a deep space environment that allows crews to return to Earth in a matter of days,” says the official document.

Does this sound reasonable or even possible?
