When you think of laser guns maybe Star Wars or perhaps the old school game laser tag comes to mind.  However there have been serious advancements in the Star Wars program in regards to national defense and some feel that things have gone too far.  This excerpt was taken from a Washington Post article:

When the Navy said last year that it had successfully fired its experimental laser gun while aboard the USS Ponce, it fed curiosity about how soon it could be before “directed energy” weapons could change how U.S. forces fight. But it also underscored something else, according to a new report: The Defense Department’s development of the technology remains uneven, decades after it began.

Who would have thought technology and military defense would go to almost a Sci Fi level.
