
There is some debate still about the properties of black holes and commenter Cole had an interesting statement about them:
The X-ray particles are outside the event the horizon. Black holes do not work like a vacuum cleaner, sucking things up. They act like any other object affected by gravity, which is all of them. Light can escape from a black hole outside of the event horizon, but because of its sheer gravitational force, it gets moved around and distorted. This is what causes everything around the black hole to look all wobbly and weird. This is called gravitational lensing. It’s the light particles being thrown off course by the black hole.
