Astronomers May “Sniff Alien Atmospheres” Using Exoplanet Spectrophotometry

part technical and all cool!

The S.E.T.I. program has started up again recently and they have a new way to search for aliens.  Many may be familiar with their efforts in the 1970s.  And to this day there is still debates over the”arecibo message” and the arecibo reply.  Whether those are worth exploring or not doesn’t matter.  What does matter is their cool new way to search and scan exoplanets.  Here is some info about how this could be done:

Dr. Angerhausen will give a short introduction to the science of extrasolar planets, in particular the technique of transit, eclipse and phasecurve spectro-photometry. He will describe his various projects in this emerging field using state of the art spectroscopic and photometric instruments on the largest ground based telescopes, the ‘flying telescope’ SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) and the Kepler and Hubble space telescopes.

Pretty cool right!  Do you think they will find anything?

Let’s check out a video and how and when this might take place on page 2
