Wait what?
Astronomers broke the record again by 200 million light years. Yo may or may not remember a recent story making its round on the internet about a galaxy that was 13.2 billion light years away. Its name is EGS8p7 and it may have been populated by exceptionally hot stars. Here is what they had to say about this new one:
The galaxy, found in the Ursa Major constellation, is especially interesting because astronomers had not expected to find something so distant in Hubble images. This makes it rather bright, and allowed Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 to measure the “redshift” of the galaxy. The greater the redshift, the farther the galaxy. This galaxy’s light was redshifted by a factor of 11.1, compared to 8.63 for the previous record holder.
In a related question how do you feel about the redshift model for measuring distance? Feel free to comment with your ideas.
