They make a good point here…

From potential water to unusual formations, Mars is hotly debated as a past and current environment for life.  In this latest theory, astronomers make quite an interesting point.  There is a place in South America called The Atacama Desert.  It is one of the driest places on our planet and has a strikingly similar resemblence to some of the terrain on Mars.

So what does this have to do with their theory about life on another planet?

It has to do with making a comparison to specific parts of the terrain in The Atacama Desert to a specific area on Mars.  The patterns are almost identical.
