Diamonds are extremely rare although this breakthrough may make them more common. That can be a bit of a stretch but there is a special state of carbon called Q-carbon that makes this possible. It has ferromagnetic properties, which if you have seen videos of ferrofluid, that may be a crude way of understanding this. Here is a bit more info on the breakthrough:
Researchers from North Carolina State University have discovered a new phase of solid carbon, called Q-carbon, which is distinct from the known phases of graphite and diamond. They have also developed a technique for using Q-carbon to make diamond-related structures at room temperature and at ambient atmospheric pressure in air.
