Dude Makes A Sculpture From Ferrofluid And Its Amazing

This stuff is bizarre..

This strange substance was invented in 1963 and it has magnetic properties while maintaining its fluid form.   Have you ever heard of ferofluid before? In the video this home experimenter makes a really cool sculpture using this stuff and some magnetic force.  Note:  Don’t try this without the supervision of a professional.

Let’s check out what this guy makes out of this bizarre substance in the video on page 2

This is a background on this bizarre substance and how it came to be from wikipedia:

A ferrofluid (portmanteau of ferromagnetic and fluid) is a liquid that becomes strongly magnetized in the presence of a magnetic field. Ferrofluid was invented in 1963 by NASA’s Steve Papell as a liquid rocket fuel that could be drawn toward a pump inlet in a weightless environment by applying a magnetic field.

Btw commenter Brad had a question about the experiment:

What did you use for power and the coil for the magnet? I’m guessing you used remaining 6 or so inches were wrapped with copper wire? About how much a what size? Seems like that would get really hot, did you have to heat sink it? I really like it!

The narrator generously replied with some instructions:

Using a 32VDC motor speed controller with a potentiometer to control the amperage and voltage. Amperage is set to 2.5A as the voltage is variable up and down using the potentiometer. It does get hot after about 30 min. of use. Around 100-150F I did not use heat sink but I did install a internal thermal overload to cut power off at 175F, the magnet wire is rated at 220F.

We hope you enjoy this cool video.
