Basically they created the Media Lab about 25+ years ago to get out of the directed research mode and improve the process of iterating and testing new ideas.  Some of the transcription from the video and contributors and their comments are:

• Cynthia Breazeal, Professor states, “How do you craft a long-term successful robot-human relationship”
• Mitchel Resnick, Professor says, “Everyone should have the opportunity to explore and experiment”

These are great fundamental questions and thoughts on improving the idea discovery process.  Also engaging people to be interested in science when they can get dissuaded by many factors will shape our future for the better.
