Mysterious Giant Ice Circle In North Dakota River Is Baffling

Any guesses how this is happening?

The Cheyenne River in North Dakota has a perfect circle of ice probably fifty feet in diameter (maybe more) circling in perfect motion.  There is no explanation and the narrator seems perplexed as well.  In the Pacific Ocean and other large bodies of non flowing water whirlpool phenomenon have been observed.  In this case there is no particular known reason for this to occur.  There are some far out theories on the internet and who knows maybe they are true but as of now it is still a mystery.

Feel free to comment in the discusson section.  Although I’m no scientific expert here are some possible theories that come to mind.  Is there some sort of whirlpool effect happening below the surface?  Even though it is a river it isn’t a super fast flowing river.  Or is there some type of paranormal or gravitational effect happening.  I’m personally stumped on this one.  Without intervention below the surface or some sort of construction shaping this thing, it remains truly confusing.  Does this river sit on some sort of latitudinal and longitudinal point of significance?

The narrator states it is west of a bridge so exploring any kind of dam construction and the like in the area may be of benefit.

My hypotenuse would be that the flowing water from the river spinning the still water by the bank creating a vortex. The colder still water would be able to freeze as the warmer water passed the vortex formed would create a shape as such . You can see the same thing if you make a little bend in any flowing water mass and add a little dye.

Haha regardless of what Dennis says you are actually spot on, extensive research has been done and that is exactly what happens, although you don’t necessarily need warm and cold water. Even if it’s all cold as long as the eddy is in just the right spot you will get the same results.

It’s not baffling, it’s cause by an Eddie in water that’s below freezing. The river is flowing fast enough not to freeze over but the water in the Eddie slows down enough to create ice and it grows and spins on top of the water
