Wow look at the quantum dot materials in these beakers!  According to this scientist he explains that these particular substances are only a few nanometers which isn’t much wider than an atom.  Aside from general coolness and zoning out staring at them all day, he feels these substances could be used in futuristic LED lights and possibly solar cells of the future.  They convert light to charge (or electricity) extremely efficiently.

In terms of more real world applications another main realm would be converting chemistry directly into light.  This is part of their bioluminescence project.  In the ocean lots of organisms use bioluminescense to attract prey and for other reasons such as defensive purposes like confusing enemies.  The possibilities are endless.  Traffic applications, new kinds of paint, medical uses, clothing and uniforms and more.
