NASA Tests an Awesome Engine: The XRS-2200

This engine looks rad in the test at the space center.  These commenters had some intetesting input.

Commenter Raoul Duke says:

It cranks out at sea level 204,402 Lbf. And they even tried to squeeze one into a blackbird SR71 but apparently the progect was scraped in about 1999. It was designed to power nasa’s Venturestar but that was scrapped too. Atleast this is what they tell the public.

Commenter Barrel Roll says:

It flew on an sr71 to do cold flow testing. That research in the late 90s combined with Rocketdyne research for the Apollo program led to this engine design. They had the option to fire it but never did. Look up LASRE project. Probably the last flights of any SR-71a and b other than for donation or storage.

We hope you enjoy the video and look forward to more from NASA

Gasoline? You think? Some of the fastest jet engines were actually a diesel fuel mixture.

A LOT OF THRUST!! I read some about this years ago but never saw it in action before.
I do know that the SR-71 Blackbird was brought out of mothballs and did fly a few missions over Iraq when our intelligence satellite went down during the Iraqi war.

Yeah, I know we have better. This is old and just now being released to the public. So loud. Aliens are probably laughing at this right now. Anti gravity propulsion system or nothing!

This was the actual engine that was developed for the space shuttle. Wasn’t ready then. Probably not ready now. The X-30 was supposed to use it too. But now we’re at the X-48. Lol
