This home experimenter takes a cylindrical piece of copper with a hole bored out of it and drops in a circular neodymium magnet. Neodymium magnets are some of the most powerful in the world. These types of magnets were invented as recently as the 1980s. The costs have also come down a lot since the 90s making experiments like this more affordable.
