How did this happen? The Salton Sea is an unusual place in Southern California, somewhat inland. And the strangest part is it was not a natural formation which we will get into on the next page. The eco system is bizarre as well. Not only is this the largest lake in California but has the second most diverse bird population in the entire United States. Whoa…and we hardly ever hear about this place.

Pretty easy, the Colorado couldnt be tamed by tiny dams, so it overflowed the gates and filled the 15×35 mile valley with water. Thanks to the Hoover Dam , its no longer a stream fed.lake.
