Discussion in regards to astronomy related subjects such as the search for extraterrestrials are often spirited.  This video thread has some interesting opinions.

Commenter Z C had this to say about our perspective in general:

They fail to realize that life on other planets may not look like life on our planet. We find Earth comfy, an alien race may think it looks horrible. We could have life on the other planets in our own system. An organism may have no recognizable DNA, or it could be based on silicon rather than carbon. There may be an alien race that is much more intelligent than us, but because they regard our planet as barren by their standards, they ignore it.  We can not be so arrogant to assume that life everywhere else will resemble our own.
