Who remembers Star Wars when R2-D2 projected princess Leah through a hologram and people went bananas?  Well, that may not be far off, and possibly even further along in that you could interact with these holograms with a new technology.  Here is an excerpt from the research project:

“Touchable holograms, immersive virtual reality that you can feel and complex touchable controls in free space, are all possible ways of using this system,” said Dr Ben Long, the first author of the paper published in the journal ACM Transactions on Graphics.
