Bending a Laser With a Stream of Water

Take the empty bottle and punch a hole on the surface of the water bottle.  Make sure the hole is punched midway around the bottle.  Put it in the bowl and fill the bottle up with water.  You’ll notice that the water starts flowing out of the bottle through the hole.

Next, shine the laser beam right at the water bottle hole from behind, aligning it with the stream of water.  The laser beam appears to bend down with the water into the bowl.  Technically the light doesn’t bend, its the water acting like a fiber optic cable bending it.  Remember, water is reflective giving it the ability to do this.

The principal being observed here is total internal reflection.  It is a phenomenon that happens when a propogating wave strikes a medium boundary at an angle larger than a particular critical angle with respect to the normal service.
