This goes beyond scientific debate and would consider it almost an environmental debate and the comments are very spirited.  Some are strongly opposed to the CERN research project and some are strongly for it.  Commenter Rick is more skeptical of its safety:

CERN is currently upgrading their collider and will again be operational in September of 2015 with a difference. The last collision runs they’ve done have produced phenomenon outside the collider and around the world such as odd lights in the sky, earth tremors and other unexplainable artifacts. This is what some people working in CERN have leaked to the public. Now when the collider goes operational again it will smash particles with 8 times more force then the last runs. There is much speculation what could happen colliding particles with such force some more dire then others. One of the worst predictions is the creation of a microscopic blackhole with enough mass to consume it’s environment feeding itself gaining more mass before it can evaporate. If this happen there will be no hope for us. The blackhole will continue feeding until it sinks into the very core of the Earth eating away Earths inner mass and in 2 weeks the blackhole would have consumed enough of the inner Earth where the Earth will collapse into itself and explode. This black hole will next consume our entire solar system including our sun.

There are other dire consequences not as all destroying as the run away blackhole but very devastating. Earth quakes, ripping of fabric of our reality perhaps releasing incredible destructive energy and radiation, etc. Let us hope our Universe has fail safes sparing young ignorant foolish races like our own from destroying ourselves by poking at the fabric of our dimension.
