When They Mixed Ferrofluid and Superconductors THIS Happened

Have you heard of it?

NASA is the inventor of this unusual substance and they did an experiment with it. When mixing superconductors and this unusual substance some interesting effects happen.  Aside from a cool experiment, superconductors themselves have been getting a lot of press lately.  Much of this is due to the discussions of the hyperloop proposed by Elon Musk of Tesla. Also many people probably see the potential of other applications in travel, computing and a lot of other fields. Now the every adventurous Myles Powers shows us an interesting experiment in superconductivity.

Here are two very cool pics of mini sculptures:

First and foremost do not try this without the supervision of a professional. And here is a bit of backgroung on ferrofluids from wikipedia:

A ferrofluid (portmanteau of ferromagnetic and fluid) is a liquid that becomes strongly magnetized in the presence of a magnetic field. Ferrofluid was invented in 1963 by NASA’s Steve Papell as a liquid rocket fuel that could be drawn toward a pump inlet in a weightless environment by applying a magnetic field.[1]

We hope you like the video. And do you think superconductors are going to be used in more applications? Feel free to comment on it.

thanks to sach1tb for the pic

And for more awesomeness, here is an experiment where they dunk some glowsticks in the stuff.

Commenter experiment boy had this to say:

This is why I love Science, even when you think you know everything about 2 separate things you can always find a way to mix them together and create something new. Brilliant!
