Here is a bit of into on this latest bizarre radio signal picked up by astronomers.  These are the most likely sources that the astronomers think this radio signal came from:

“Hidden within an incredibly massive dataset, we found a very peculiar signal that matched all the known characterizes of a FRB, but with a tantalizing extra element that we simply have never seen before,” said team member Dr Jeffrey Peterson, of Carnegie Mellon University.

According to the astronomers, FRB 110523 originated around six billion light-years away inside a highly magnetized region of space, possibly linking it to a supernova or the interior of an active star-forming nebula.

That being said, they still don’t know for sure that it came from those sources.  What do you think?  Feel free to comment with your ideas.

Telescopes have been picking up so-called fast radio bursts (FRBs) since 2001. They last just a few milliseconds and erupt with about as much energy as the sun releases in a month. No one knows what causes them, but the brevity of the bursts means their source has to be small – hundreds of kilometres across at most – so they can’t be from ordinary stars. And they seem to come from far outside the galaxy.
