What Is Quantum Electrodynamics?

Is this something to fear or embrace?

Could this be the future of computing?  This is really out there and actually hard to get one’s mind around, but absolutely fascinating.  And there are people on both sides.  Some say this is to be used in the next gen computers.  Others say this is like the Terminator 2 movie and to be avoided.

Using superconducting atomic traps and single microwave photon pulses, through the power of Quantum Electrodynamics, or QED, it is possible to entangle the photon with the trapped atoms in a cavity and measure the quantum system as it evolves; measuring the photon from creation to annihilation.

This process, in effect, “freezes” light itself and allows the quantum mechanical system to be studied under controlled operations. An immediate application of this would be a super-accurate clock, that would be even more accurate than today’s atomic clocks.

Here is a bit more on how this could be used in super powerful computing:

Such technology would revolutionise computing, as qubits allow for simultaneous calculations, multitasking of computations and would allow many-body solutions to some problems in physics and chemistry.

And commenter “Carter” had a comical and astute observation:

Since the speed of light is now an arthritic castaway, it frees us to answer the entanglement question. Simply state (not assume) that some things go faster than light. Such as a photon who’s trying to keep an appointment.

We hope you enjoy the video!
