I wonder what it would look like (in slow motion, especially) if you had a source of colored smoke or powder mixed in the air that was coming in the tube behind the ball.

Just look on Mythbusters, they are done that.

Is he right?  MythBusters has some cool experiments but not sure one just like this.

    I shot a full can of root beer once with a very large caliber rifle. Remember that vibrating platform experiment in school? Yeah, but A LOT faster. Bottom of can embedded about 1/2″ into hard dirt. The top of the can was found about 20′ away and everything in between was shredded into little strips
