These Sensors May Shape the Future of Robotics

The teams at MIT are often incredible and their breakthroughs in the areas of optics and robotics are no exception.  There is a new technology called GelSight.  Originally it started as a system for imaging microscopic objects.  However, they have found an interesting and potentially more disruptive application for this technology in robotics.  It gives them incredible dexterity and enables them to “feel” objects with sight.  As pressure is applied to the front side of a pad, it reflects light back and then can the computer can read the light in different ways and adjust its movement.
